Inspiring Volunteer: Charlie from the UK

When Charlie first walked through the doors of Volunteer Vietnam in March, no one knew just how meaningful his journey would become.

At first glance, his background seemed worlds away from volunteering. Working in fashion, Charlie had never studied social work or education. But what he brought with him was something no qualification could replace, a genuine desire to help others and a heart full of compassion.

For one month, Charlie immersed himself in every opportunity. Whether teaching English at local kindergartens and primary schools or supporting residents at the Da Nang Social Support Center (SSC), he approached each day with energy, patience, and an eagerness to learn. No task was too small, and no challenge ever discouraged him.

Yet it wasn't the lessons he taught or the activities he completed that left the biggest impact.

It was the relationships he built.

Charlie had a natural way of connecting with children, especially those who needed love and attention the most. He listened, laughed, played, and made every child feel safe and valued. Those moments, though simple, became unforgettable for both the children and our team.

When his first placement came to an end, saying goodbye was not easy.

But Charlie wasn't ready to say goodbye.

A few months later, in July, he returned to Volunteer Vietnam not because he had to but because he wanted to continue the story he had started.

This time, his days were often spent with a pair of autistic twin boys at the Social Support Center. There was no grand project or complicated plan. Instead, Charlie shared the little moments that matter most. He spent hours playing games, walking hand in hand with the boys, and simply being by their side.

To many people, these might seem like ordinary activities.

But to the twins, they meant friendship, trust, and joy.

With every walk, every smile, and every moment of patience, Charlie reminded us that volunteering is not measured by the number of tasks completed. It is measured by the lives we touch and the connections we create.

Over the course of two months with Volunteer Vietnam, Charlie showed us that making a difference doesn't depend on your profession or your experience. It begins with kindness, empathy, and the willingness to give your time to someone who needs it.
